Are you still using an older iPhone model and rely on WhatsApp to stay connected? It might be time for an upgrade. WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, is dropping support for iOS versions older than 15.1 starting May 5, 2025. This change means some iPhones will no longer be compatible with the app, leaving users without access to their chats and contacts unless they switch to a newer device.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, the update will primarily impact users with iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as these models can’t update beyond iOS 12.5.7. While the exact number of users affected is unclear, WhatsApp’s decision marks the end of an era for these older models.

WhatsApp relies on updated iOS versions to implement new features and enhance performance. Older operating systems like iOS 12 lack the advanced tools and APIs, making it challenging for WhatsApp to keep its app optimised.

If your iPhone runs iOS 15.1 or higher, there’s no need to worry—you’ll be able to continue using WhatsApp as long as your device is updated. Simply go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone and install the latest available version.
However, if you own an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus, you’ll need to consider upgrading to a newer iPhone model. WhatsApp is providing a five-month notice to help users prepare, giving you time to explore alternatives or plan a device switch.
For Android users, there’s no need to panic as this update only affects iOS devices. If your iPhone is on the list, now is the time to plan your next move.
