Apple’s highly awaited artificial intelligence features will reportedly miss the initial launch of its upcoming iPhone and iPad software overhauls, with a revised timeline pushing their arrival to October. This delay, however, is designed to give Apple additional time to iron out bugs and ensure a smoother rollout.

The new AI suite, known as Apple Intelligence, will not be available when iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are released in September, according to a report by Bloomberg. Instead, Apple plans to integrate these advanced features in an update scheduled for October.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple will start making Apple Intelligence available to developers this week through iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas. This early access aims to gather developer feedback and address potential issues before the broader consumer release.

The stakes are high for Apple as it seeks to make a significant impact in the generative AI space. The delay underscores the company’s need to resolve stability concerns and refine the features based on developer input. Apple Intelligence includes a range of functionalities such as prioritising key notifications, summarising web pages and voice notes, enhancing writing tools, and integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The delay in launching Apple Intelligence could mean that the upcoming iPhone 16 models will not initially include these AI features. Consumers might need to wait for a software update to access the full suite of new AI functionalities. Apple’s strategy also aims to boost sales of the iPhone 16, which is expected to have minimal design changes but will benefit from the enhanced software features.

The company plans to roll out its full set of Apple Intelligence features through multiple updates to iOS 18 over the end of 2024 and into the first half of 2025.
