A recent report suggests that Apple is closer than ever to developing a flip-style foldable iPhone, akin to the Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. However, don’t expect to get your hands on it until at least 2026.

According to The Information (via Gizmodo), Apple is in the early stages of developing its foldable phone. The company has reportedly started reaching out to component suppliers in Asia to source new parts designed for this innovative device. The rumoured foldable iPhone, code-named V68, is expected to feature a clamshell design, folding from a standard-size phone at its midpoint.
Apple’s goal is to create a foldable iPhone that eliminates the crease—a common issue with current foldable devices. While competitors like Samsung and Google have struggled with this design flaw, OnePlus has made strides with its OnePlus Open. Still, Apple aims to achieve a flawlessly smooth fold, a challenge that could set its foldable apart.

While the foldable iPhone is still a couple of years away, Apple is also rumoured to be working on other foldable innovations. Reports from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggest that Apple might be experimenting with foldable MacBooks as well. However, recent foldable PCs like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold 16 and HP Spectre Fold have struggled to justify their high price points beyond the novelty of their design.
As Apple works to overcome these hurdles, it faces the challenge of revitalising its iPhone lineup amidst a recent sales slump. If Apple can deliver a compelling foldable device with significant new features, it could reignite interest and persuade users to make the switch. For now, the anticipation for a foldable iPhone continues, with 2026 marking the earliest possible launch date.
