Vodafone U.K. asks customers to not upgrade iPhone 4S to iOS 6.1

HIGHLIGHTS

The operator says the latest OS build could prevent some users from accessing 3G, sending and receiving SMSes and at times even making calls. There’s no clarity yet on whether this is an issue limited to Vodafone U.K., or users on other networks.

British mobile service provider Vodafone is warning all iPhone 4S users on its network across the United Kingdom to hold off on upgrading to Apple iOS 6.1 on their iPhone, specifically the iPhone 4S. The operator states that post upgrading to the latest version of the OS, some iPhone 4S users may have 3G connectivity issues, problems with sending and receiving text messages and even sometimes while making outgoing calls. While the issue may be intermittent, holding off on the upgrade is the official line of the operator. This comes on the back of users reporting to the service provider about these issues post download and installation of the 6.1 version of the OS.

Vodafone, on its part is communicating this to users via SMS and even on their website. The SMS screenshot was posted by a user Michelle Muirhead on Twitter. We have photographs of both communication methods.

Also, the mobile service provider has blamed Apple for the issue. The forum post from the company says, “Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.” No word from Apple so far, on this issue. Incidentally, no other operator globally has reported such an issue on their network, yet, but if it is a major software issue, this warning from Vodafone might be the tip of the iceberg.

The iOS 6.1 updates primarily introduced some LTE updates for specific regions, some bug fixes and gave SIRI to purchase movie tickets for you – again very region specific.
