Vivo plans on manufacturing smartphones in Greater Noida by the end of October. The manufacturer will create over 2,200 jobs at its facility in the city, when it will become operational. Vivo has already invested Rs. 125 crore in the first phase of the facility, which will have a capability of producing over 1 million phones per month. The company has also started hiring people for the facility.
Alex Feng, Vivo Global GMP and India CEO told PTI, “At the end of this month our Greater Noida assembling unit will be operational that will bring over 2,000 jobs for the product lines and around 200 managerial positions also. The maximum capacity will be one million units per month.” He added that the second phase of investment will be made early near. The company also plans on increasing the total number of service centers in the country to 200, by the end of this year. Currently, it has 30 service centers along with 10,000 outlets across 100 cities in India. Vivo entered the Indian market in December last year≤ with the X5 Max smartphone.
Vivo is not the first Chinese company to start manufacturing its phones in the country as part of the Make in India initiative. In August, Lenovo had announced that it was going to start manufacturing smartphones in India. The phones will be manufactured in its plant in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, where it is already manufacturing the Moto E, for Motorola. The Lenovo K3 Note will also be made there as well. Xiaomi had also announced that it was partnering with Foxconn to manufacture its smartphones in India. The phones will be manufactured at Foxconn’s manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh.
On the same note, OnePlus has also announced that it is partnering with Foxconn to make Its smartphones in India. Other companies that have tied up with Foxconn to start manufacturing in India include Asus and Gionee. Asus will be manufacturing the Zenfone 2 Laser and the Zenfone Go, while Gionee will be manufacturing the F103. Meanwhile, Coolpad plans to invest about $300 million for the manufacturing handsets in India, and has partnered with Videocon. Even Indian companies like Micromax, Celkon and Karbonn have announced that they will start manufacturing smartphones in India.
