The refreshed Nokia 6 has started receiving the update to Android 8.0 Oreo just days after its launch in China. The update also brings optional support for Google Play services to the Nokia 6 (2018).

The Nokia 6 (2018) that launched in China last week came with Android Nougat out-of-the-box. But just three days after, users have started receiving the Android Oreo update along with support for Google Play.

Nokiapoweruser reported the update arrived immediately after booting up the device. The update brings new features to the device including the picture-in-picture mode, notification controls, and under the hood optimisations.

While it was disappointing to see the Nokia 6 (2018) launch with Android Nougat, HMD Global was quick to address the issue. Additionally, the update also allows users to install Google Play services. It is optional and can be uninstalled. Note that China’s firewall does not allow Google Play to run on Android phone in the country.

However, the ability to install Play Services will be welcomed by international travelers who otherwise had to unlock the bootloader of their phones to enable Google Play.

Meanwhile, the older Nokia 6 (review) which is available in India still has not received a stable update to Android Oreo. Last week, HMD Global’s head of product Juho Sarvikas tweeted that a beta version of Android 8.0 Oreo is rolling out to the beta testers of Nokia 6 and a stable commercial roll out is “well on track”.
