The new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 promises better drop resistance

HIGHLIGHTS

Corning has announced its new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which has been developed to prevent screens from breaking when dropped on concrete and asphalt.

The new glass is also scratch-resistant.

Corning has not revealed which smartphones will be equipped with the new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 yet.

Smartphones have become larger over the years, and while the larger displays have enhanced user experience, they have also posed a significant challenge for manufacturers who want to ensure the screen doesn’t crack. This is because screens with a larger diagonal length are more susceptible to breaking if you happen to drop your smartphone. Since displays are notoriously expensive to replace (in most cases, you might as well buy a new smartphone altogether), addressing this challenge has always been important.

Now, in an effort to reduce screen damage upon falling, Corning has come out with its new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 ( the successor to the previously launched Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus). The new tough glass formulation has been created to prevent damage that can be incurred from surfaces outside of your home.

Understanding that the soft flooring of one’s home doesn’t always pose a large threat to the integrity of your screen, Corning aimed at making the glass resistant to hard surfaces such as concrete and asphalt. The idea was that the displays should not break when users accidentally drop their phones on the road.

While developing the glass, Corning used 80-grit sandpaper to mimic the texture of concrete. The brand used different lab machinery to run a variety of tests on the glass. According to the brand, the glass can protect your display from cracking when dropped from the height of your hip (approximately 1 metre) onto concrete. It also protects the display when dropped from a height of 2-m (approximately as high as your head) onto the asphalt.

Corning believes that while preventing displays from shattering is important, it is not the only target that needed to be achieved by the glass. Scratches on the display can hamper the viewing experience for users, and the new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is claimed to prevent the same. Scratches aren’t just caused by drops – they can be caused by the keys in your bag or pocket, your work desk, and any other abrasive surface that may come into contact with the smartphone.

We may see smartphones equipped with the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 later in the coming year. The brand has not confirmed which companies are using this new glass.
