If 1GHz dual-core processors (like Samsung’s Orion)seemed like overkill for the mobile platform, wait till you hear what Texas Instruments has lined-up: a 1.5GHz dual-core system-on-chip called OMAP4440, the successor to the popular OMAP4430 processor. But then again, ARM’s 2.5GHz quad-core A15 Eagle processor is the real overkill!
Designed specifically for smartphones and tablets, the SoC sports the new dual-core ARM Cortex A9 1.5GHz processor, as well as two Cortex M3 cores, and one separate 3D graphics engine.
[RELATED_ARTICLE]Compared to its predecessor, the OMAP4440 is supposedly much faster in all respects, offering 33% speed gains for web browsing, 25% more graphics performance, and twice the video playback performance. The SoC also has improved support for video recording, capable of up to 1080p HD stereoscopic 3D.
You can expect the first OEMs to bring out devices with the OMAP4440 SoC by late 2011, and in the meanwhile, the dual-core 1GHz OMAP4430 SoC will start making its presence felt in the market by early 2011.
