Supreme Court lawyer reveals iPhone 15 exchange scam on Amazon: Here’s how he was duped

In an era where online shopping has become the norm, scams and fraudulent activities are increasingly prevalent. One such alarming incident was recently highlighted by Supreme Court lawyer Mukul P Unny on X, who shared his distressing experience involving an iPhone 15 exchange on Amazon.

On July 21, 2024, Unny ordered an iPhone 15 from Amazon, trading in his iPhone 13. Next day, a delivery executive arrived at around 9:30 PM. After providing an OTP (One-Time Password) and handing over his old phone, Unny was puzzled when the executive requested an additional OTP. Confused, he initially declined, stating he had already given the required OTP.

The delivery executive then contacted his supervisor, who informed Unny that the exchange process was managed by a different team. “I said I cannot give away the product especially since the OTP is given and the app was showing that the product is delivered. But this supervisor Ashok (8076650306) requested me to return, lest his team will have to make for the loss,” Unny wrote on his X post.

Trusting the supervisor’s assurances, Unny handed over the device, but the promised follow-up never occurred.

On July 23, Unny filed a complaint with Amazon Customer Care, which promised a refund if the product was not delivered. However, when he followed up on July 26, he was told that the issue required further investigation and was given a new date of May 31, 2024. Ultimately, Amazon denied the refund, leaving Unny with a significant financial loss of Rs. 38,000.

The situation took a further twist when Ashok contacted Unny, proposing a location to exchange his old phone for the new one. This move raised red flags about the legitimacy of the entire process.

Fortunately, after considerable effort and public support, Amazon has initiated the refund process, but this incident underscores the growing need for vigilance and transparency in online transactions.
