Updated on 26-Sep-2012

Sony India has announced the launch of the Xperia Tipo in the country, the company’s latest budget Android phone. The Tipo will be available in two versions – single SIM and dual SIM. The price of the single SIM version is Rs. 9,999, while the Tipo Dual (dual SIM version) is priced at Rs. 10,499.

The Xperia Tipo has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800MHz processor, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system and a 3.2-inch display. There is a 1500mAh battery and an expandable memory slot that can take up a microSD card up to 32GB. Sony has also tied up with Box.net to offer free 50GB storage on the cloud. This offer is available across all Xperia NXT range of smartphones, including the Tipo.

“We have expanded our Xperia range with Tipo, Sony’s first entry-level price category smartphone under the Xperia brand. Committed to the Indian market, these devices have been designed for selective markets, including India”, said Kenichiro Hibi, Managing Director, Sony India.

Additionally, Vodafone users will get 500MB free data usage on 3G for three months. The Tipo will be available in four colours – white, black, blue and red.

Sony officially also announced that the mobile and smartphone division is also now a part of Sony India. “We are happy to announce the integration of Sony Mobile Communications into Sony India. Mobile has been an integral part of the brand’s growth in India and we are working together to deliver products that are relevant to Indian consumers”, said Kenichiro Hibi, Managing Director, Sony India. This change had unofficially happened once Sony and Ericsson ended the partnership, but the official announcement has now been done.
