Sony unveils long-lasting fast Lions

Sony now has the next generation of energy storage devices in its hands!

They have announced a new line of rechargeable Lithium Ion cells which have astonishing specifications. These batteries use olivine-type lithium ion phospate cathodes and give a much desired combination of long life, fast recharging and good power density.

These marvels are capable of as many as 2000 charge discharge cycles, and if that wasn’t impressive enough, they manage to retain more than 80% of their capacity even after that! Sony claims that is is four times as much as existing lithium ion batteries right now.

The batteries will be capable of getting charged up to 99% of their full capacity is as little as 30minutes, which is half of that of their current batteries. Imagine the consequences this can have for mobile devices, where battery life and recharge time are especially important.

Furthermore, these batteries can have a capacity of 1800W/kg and provide high current rating of 20A during continuous discharge. They claim to be able to do this by minimizing the resistance resistance offered by the materials. Such high power ratings make is most suitable for motor-driven devices such as electric power tools, and this is infact the launch market for Sony. Over time though they plant to bring out the technology for other mobile devices.

For those seeking more specificity here are the details they have offered:
