Sony’s Android phone

Recently HTC showcased a customized UI for it’s Android phone, the HTC Hero which it dubbed “Sense UI”. Now what we have is what appears to be the UI for an upcoming Android based phone by Sony Ericcson.

This heavily customized UI is supposedly for Sony’s as yet unannounced XPERIA mobile code named “Rachael”. It showcases a UI which is rather graphically intense, with interactive 3D cards representing data items from contacts, to social feeds to email. The mobile itself will feature a rather impressive 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a 8MP camera.

With these two UIs (“Sense UI” and “Rachael’s” UI) it is hard to discern just from looks that they both run on the same OS platform, except perhaps in the most basic aspects of interaction design. This is just a showcase for how easily and heavily the Android OS gives in to customization, and a telling sign that we can expect a variety and differentiation amongst manufacturers even while they are using the same Android base.
