Sony reveals Android 4.3 and 4.4 upgrade roadmap
Sony has listed smartphones that will get the Android 4.3 update and the ones that will get KitKat 4.4 as well
Sony has released a list of smartphones on its official blog listing the smartphones that will receive the Android 4.3 update.
Starting with the ones running on Android 4.2, the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 from next month. The rollout will happen in phases. Some markets will see the update as soon as next month where as others will have to wait for some time.
Some smartphones running on an older generation of Android will be upgraded directly to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. These include the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V. This update will also begin next month.
Last but not least, some smartphones will also see the Android 4.4 KitKat update. Google officially unveiled Android 4.4 KitKat a while back but the OS debuted on the Nexus 5 that was officially launched on October 31. Sony products that will get the 4.4 update include the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1.
Users can follow Sony Mobiles on Twitter @SonyMobileNews, where the company will post updates with specific info on product upgrade timings & software features as things progress.
Sony is one of the first companies to announce the Android 4.4 update for its smartphones. The new version of the OS designed to consumer low storage space and will run effectively on smartphones with as low as 512MB of RAM. It is a bit of surprise then to see that the Galaxy Nexus, the two-generation older nexus smartphone won’t be getting the Android 4.4 update. Google has said on its official support page that the “Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices”. So if you are one who is still rocking a Galaxy Nexus, may want to consider upgrading.
