For a couple of years now we have been hearing this discussion on the internet that smartphones are always listening to what we say. A solid example of how we get a relatable reel about the things that we just spoke about or even a product ad. All of this was just something that everyone accepted. But now, it has been confirmed that our smartphones really listen to us secretly.
A marketing firm that works with big companies like Google and Facebook has admitted that smartphones come equipped with software that listens to users through their microphones. Then the firm uses this data to send targeted ads to users and that’s how you get those ads that feel spooky at times. This was revealed by a 404 Media report.
Cox Media Group, which is a big name in the TV and radio industry, revealed that its Active Listening technology uses AI to monitor and analyse conversations. This software collects real-time data on user intentions by listening to discussions. The voice data is then combined with behavioural data. This data is then used by advertisers to target consumers precisely when they are actively considering a purchase. According to the report that I mentioned earlier, this software collects and analyses “behavioural and voice data from 470+ sources.”
Now, this isn’t something that the big smartphone makers want their audience to know. The leak has now triggered a strong response from companies that are associated with the marketing firm. Meta has announced a thorough review of the agency’s practices to make sure that no user data was collected without explicit consent. On the other hand, Amazon has denied any involvement with the firm.
