Samsung's UFS-based storage is fast, but it won't run on regular micro-SD sockets.
Samsung’s new UFS-based SD cards are incredibly fast, but they don’t fit the regular micro-SD card socket that you get on your smartphone and other devices. Responding to a query by Droid Life, Samsung said it has developed a new socket type, which can fit both UFS and micro-SD storage chips. Samsung told the publication that it’s working with “different partners” to increase adoption of the storage.
The company itself has been using UFS-based storage on its phones and other devices for a while now. Both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones have UFS 2.0-based internal storage, as do the latest Note series phones as well. In fact, the adoption of UFS 2.0 storage increased this year, with companies like Xiaomi and HTC using it in their flagships as well. Of course, the storage medium has been used in devices other than smartphones also.
Samsung’s newly announced UFS-based card, though, are not UFS 2.0 compatible. These run on the UFS 1.0 standard, which is still quite fast, and ideally much faster than regular micro-SD cards that you buy.
