Samsung’s latest patent suggests that future Samsung phones might be able to assess body fat

Samsung has filed a new patent which will let devices such as smartphones measure body fat via four sensors. According to this new patent, you will need to hold the device, covering all four sensors with your hand. It will use electrical impedance to measure your body fat. Samsung was granted the patent this month, that was initially filed in March 2014. This would mean that Samsung was already working on this technology while the Galaxy S5 was launched.

Samsung has already tried using a heart rate sensor with the Galaxy S5. With this latest patent, it wants to provide more fitness solutions with its smartphones. The company already has an S-Health app which does work well, but requires a separate Samsung gear to utilize the complete S-Health ecosystem. Other phone manufacturers are also relying on wearable accessories for fitness tracking.

Continuing smartphone innovation, Samsung has shed its plastic smartphones in favour of metal-clad ones. The company is also developing its own chipsets lately, instead of relying on Qualcomm and MediaTek for its flagship devices. Moreover, Samsung is also trying to push its Tizen OS in the budget segment against Android smartphones. With this technology, Samsung will be aiming to present a device with comprehensive fitness tracking capabilities.
