Samsung to hand over Android device prototypes for Apple’s scrutiny

Updated on 27-May-2011

There’ve been some new developments in Apple’s patent lawsuit with Samsung over the Korean giant’s Android device designs. A federal court is making Samsung turn over a few prototypes of devices to Apple, so that they can scrutinize the devices, and prove any similarities to the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and the iPod), in terms product and interface design, and even the packaging.

Samsung is reportedly handing over five prototypes – Samsung Galaxy S II, Droid Charge, Infuse 4G, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1. To ensure no trade secrets of unreleased devices change hands, only the legal team at Apple will get their hands on the prototypes – though how a legal team that isn’t technologically equipped could gather the correct information is a question that isn’t being asked. Of course, we are not saying that checking out Samsung’s designs ahead of market would have been Apple’s original motive – it’ll do as a silver lining.

Sickened by the patent wars, one can’t help but not side with Apple on this one – great artists steal – as Jobs was fond of paraphrasing, and each product should speak for itself in a market.
