Samsung shipping Galaxy S7 phones with different image sensors
Some units of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge phones are shipping with Sony’s IMX260 sensor, while others come with Samsung’s ISOCELL sensor
Samsung is reportedly shipping the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge with two different camera sensors. Some units are supposedly shipping with Sony’s IMX260 sensor, while others have Samsung’s own ISOCELL sensors. According to a report by Android Authority, users ran benchmark tests on their devices using apps like AIDA64, which shows the phone’s hardware details. This isn’t the first time Samsung has done this as the company’s previous flagship, the Galaxy S6, was also shipped with two different camera sensors.
As per the report, it seems like most US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor come with Sony’s sensor. The Exynos 8890 powered device seem to have an ISOCELL sensor. It is speculated that the reason for this decision may be due to supply chain issues. It is possible that there wasn’t enough stock of a certain sensor to use in all Galaxy S7 variants. So Samsung may have chosen to backfill it with the other sensor to continue production. Back in November last year, it was reported that some variants of the Galaxy S7 may feature Sony’s IMX300 sensor, while the others might be shipped with Samsung’s ISOCELL sensor.
