Samsung said to manufacture Apple A5 chips at its Texas factory

A report by Reuters claims that the Apple A5 processor, the dual-core processing chip in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, was made by Samsung in its Austin, Texas factory. Neither Samsung nor Apple have confirmed the veracity of the report.

The new plant in Texas covers 1.6 million square feet, and features a $3.6 billion non-memory chip production line. According to a source, nearly all of the output of the new line is dedicated to producing Apple chips.

Samsung also produces NAND flash memory chips in its Austin plant. Other processor manufacturers and designers with operations in Austin include AMD, ARM, Intel, and Freescale. According to the Austin Chamber of Commerce, the Samsung factory is currently the largest foreign investment in the state, with a total investment of roughly $9 billion.

Relevantly, it is ironic that Samsung and Apple are currently engaged in legal battles across the world.
