Samsung wants to make more Tizen phones for India
After selling one million Z1 handsets in India, Samsung plans to expand its Tizen operating system to more smartphones.
Samsung plans to incorporate its Tizen operating system into more smartphones later this year, according to a report by Reuters. As of now, Samsung uses Tizen to power the Z1 smartphone, smartwatches and high end television sets.
The first smartphone in India on the Tizen platform was the Samsung Z1, launched this January. Reports state that Samsung has sold one million units of the Z1 in India, and it has also been popular in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In a recent report by research agency Counterpoint, the Tizen-powered Samsung Z1 was the best-selling smartphone in Bangladesh (as reported by The Financial Express).
Samsung plans to introduce a number of smartphones running the open-source Tizen OS at various price points, to attract more users and thereby gather more third party services. With Samsung and Google’s relationship often appearing rather stretched, Samsung can be expected to fit more devices with Tizen, like it did with its Gear line of smartwatches.
However, until it provides users with the vast array of applications that an Android-powered device is capable of running, Samsung may find it difficult to find takers for phones running on Tizen. No news has been disclosed about future device specifications or their price points, as of now.
