Samsung patent to allow S-Pen to be used as kickstand
The patent will allow user to pull the S-Pen out halfway and bend it by 90 degrees, this would lock the stylus in place allowing it to be used as a kickstand
Samsung has applied for a patent that allows the S-Pen to be used as a kickstand. The patent diagrams show that users will be able to pull the stylus out halfway and then bend it by 90 degrees. When the S-Pen is bent, it is automatically locked into position and turns it into a stand. This allows users to view content such as videos or use apps in portrait or landscape mode. When the S-Pen is straightened, the lock is automatically disengaged, allowing the stylus to be removed, or reinserted back into its slot.
According to the report by Patently Mobile, Samsung had filed their US patent application back in Q3 2015. So, it is possible that the technology may be used in future devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 6. There are also reports that Samsung has filed a patent for a S-Pen case that would allow the stylus to be used with non-Note devices. The patent diagrams suggest that the case would cover the entire front of the screen instead of having a ‘window’. It’s possible that case itself may have a digitizer layer that would allow the S-Pen to be used as this layer would not be there in non-Note devices.
Rumours also suggest that Samsung is working on its own version of Apple's 3D Touch technology. A patent application, which was made public, shows that Samsung has been working on this feature since April 2014. The patent describes a way in which software reacts based on the pressure that is being applied on the smartphone display. Reports say that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will come with a pressure sensitive display. Samsung is expected to unveil both the devices during the World Mobile Congress event in Barcelona. It was earlier reported that Samsung may be planning to unveil the the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge+ alongside the two devices. However, newer reports suggest that this may not be the case.
