Samsung mocks Apple in new ad with dancing ninjas and…a goat
Samsung Iceland’s surreal ad is the latest in a long line of ads that have taken potshots at the iPhone makers.
Samsung’s pitched battle against Apple through advertisements took a turn for the surreal after the Icelandic branch of the Korean phone maker released a new video commercial featuring dancing ninjas and goats, a premise that looks to be 100% meme ready. The ad was released at the beginning of this month and is currently hosted on Samsung Iceland’s YouTube page.
The ad features a man who’s trying to use an apple (the fruit, that is) like a smartphone. Shockingly, the fruit just sits in his hand like a fruit, so the man turns to a Galaxy S4, after which the ad turns…bizarre. The ominous ambient score turns into a dubstep-lite beat and women dressed like ninjas (only with ski-masks) dance (and prance and jump) with the man and pose with a mountain goat that appears in the video at that moment. The ad ends with the man using the Galaxy S4 and the chomping on the apple (the fruit, if you remember). If my words weren’t enough to do justice to the madness (which I’m pretty sure, they weren’t) you can watch the video below:

There’s really not much I can say about that ad except that I hope the guys who made it were able to bill Samsung for all the drugs they took while making it. However, judging Samsung’s ad portfolio by just this latest product would be a disservice. Earlier ads made by Samsung directly targeting Apple have been more…sober and relatively, more effective. Those ads directly targeted real users like students, hipsters (yes, that’s a demographic today), office-people and therefore, work better. This ad’s target demographic seems to Scandinavian coke-heads with a penchant for dancing female ninjas and mountain goats, which, for all we know, could actually be the largest consumers of Samsung smartphones in Iceland.
Getting back to the point, Samsung’s ads targeting Apple have been quite effective before this, so which one of the following would you pick as the most effective? Tell me your picks in the comments section below or on Twitter @postwar
