Samsung may kill the ‘Note’ brand post Galaxy Note 7 fiasco
Reports suggest that the reputation damage caused by the exploding phones may cause Samsung make such a move
Samsung may be planning to kill off its ‘Note’ brand of phones. According to a report by russian website, hi-tech.mail.ru (which quotes an anonymous source from Samsung), the reason for this move is due to the reputation damage caused by the expoding Galaxy Note 7 units. However, the report added that Samsung may not choose to rebrand the entire Galaxy lineup of phones as it will be too expensive. The same source also said that an internal survey carried by Samsung revealed that the ‘Note’ name carried a negative connotation. It isn’t yet known whether the Samsung will completely abandon its range of stylus equipped phablets, or will continue the lineup under a different name.
In related news, Samsung has announced financial incentives for customers in South Korea who exchange their Galaxy Note 7 smartphones for other Samsung smartphones. Reuters reports that the company is damage control mode, and its rivals may try and steal its market share during this tumultuous period. Recently, Samsung asked its sales partners to stop the sales and exchange of the device, and advised all users to power down their Galaxy Note 7 smartphones and return them urgently. The company even sent out fire-proof return kits to customers, which consist of several layers of boxes lined with heat resistant ceramic fiber paper.
A Samsung spokesperson also told Motherboard that the company has no plans to repair, refurbish, or resell the recalled Note 7 units. “We have a process in place to safely dispose of the phones,” the spokesperson said.
