Samsung may launch the Galaxy S7 in January next year. Korean publication, ETNews has reported that the upcoming flagship will come out in the beginning of 2016 and it would be available in premium and sub-premium variants. It is possible that the device will be announced on January 19. It is possible that the announcement of the S7 was preponed in order to compete with the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus. It had announced the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge in March this year.
Rumours suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will be powered by three different processors based on the market. It was rumoured that the Galaxy S7 may be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC. The benchmark scores of the a phone called Lucky-LTE powered by an Exynos 8890 were also leaked earlier. It has also been tipped to come with a USB Type-C port and maybe even a dual-camera setup with a 20MP primary camera. The phone may also come with a pressure sensitive display much like Apple’s 3D Touch technology. Samsung has also filed for a patent for a pressure sensitive display which may end up on the S7. The company has been working on the feature since April last year. The patent describes a way in which software reacts based on the pressure being applied. Synaptics is another company working on a pressure sensitive display. It is rumoured that its ClearForce technology will be used in the upcoming OnePlus X smartphone.
It was also reported that the Samsung’s sales growth will continue to be on the decline. According to market research firm TrendForce, it will turn will turn negative this year. The firm predicted a 1 per cent year-on-year dip in smartphone sales in 2015. The projected slump has been attributed to a weakening market share in the lower and middle segments. The report also said that Samsung smartphones comprised of about 25% of total smartphones shipped in the third quarter of 2015. It also said that the company would continue to remain the top smartphone manufacturer in the world in terms of sales volume. The company is expected to sell 323.5 million smartphones in 2015. It is estimated that the company will sell 40 million Galaxy S series phones and 10 million units of the Note 5 by the end of 2015.
