HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung Galaxy S8's key feature could be the front-mounted iris scanner capable of authenticating mobile payments. The smartphone is also likely to get improvements in the camera department.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will reportedly beat Sony's Xperia XZ Premium to market with its 1000fps slow-mo camera. Samsung is likely to stick with 12MP image sensor for S8 and add support for super slow-motion video recording.

Korea-based Naver reports that Samsung is adding DRAM to enable slow-motion video recording at super high framerates. The additional DRAM placed between the pixel part of the sensor and the circuit acts as a memory buffer. Sony has achieved similar result with its newest IMX400 image sensor, which produces 19MP still images and records full HD videos at 1000fps. The likes of Apple's iPhone 7 and Google's Pixel are only capable of shooting videos at 120fps and with the new advancements, Samsung and Sony will set a new standard for recording true slow motion videos possible on smartphones.

Samsung is also updating the front camera with a new 8MP sensor coupled with another 3.7MP RGB sensor improved facial recognition. The Galaxy Note 7 was the first Samsung smartphone to feature an iris scanner but with S8, the Korean smartphone maker is trying to make the recognition even better.

According to Bloomberg, Samsung will also enable facial recognition for mobile payments with its Galaxy S8 launch. The move is seen as an additional layer of security and will be rolled out within months of S8's release. The next Galaxy flagship will blend fingeprint, iris and facial recognition for user verification for services including Samsung Pay. Samsung is also reportedly speaking with banks to enable facial recognition method for payment systems.

Earlier rumours suggested that Samsung will mostly focus on software features of its Galaxy S8 smartphone during the launch. The Galaxy S8 will feature a new AI assistant named Bixby that will offer voice assistance, visual and text recognition among key features. The smartphone is also said to come with a desktop dock similar to Microsoft's Continuum for use as a desktop Android PC.

Samsung will unveil its Galaxy S8 and S8+ on March 29 in New York and London. The handset is said to be available for sale starting April 21 in seven different colour options.
