Samsung preparing Galaxy S7 glossy black variant to take on Jet Black iPhone 7
Samsung Galaxy S7 is nine months old and the company has lost out on opportunity to get new buyers onboard with its Galaxy Note7
Samsung plans to update its Galaxy S7 series with a new glossy black version. The new colour is aimed to compete against the popularity of Apple's Jet Black and Matte Black colour options.
Samsung is planning to fill the sales void left by cancelled Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, reports The Korea Herald. The report says the device could arrive early next month. Samsung already sells Onyx Black variant of Galaxy S7 which is closer to Apple's matte black iPhone 7 in terms of appearance. Earlier reports indicated that Jet Black and Black colour variants of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are selling like hot cakes among new buyers and those upgrading from previous generation iPhone.
The Galaxy S7 is nine months old and the company has lost out on opportunity to get new buyers onboard with its Galaxy Note7. Samsung is already working on next-generation Galaxy S8, but that device may not be unveiled at MWC in February. Samsung is pinning all its hopes on the success for Galaxy S8 to stay firm in the flagship smartphone race.
According to rumours, the Galaxy S8 will come bundled with an AI assistant based on Viv platform, which Samsung acquired recently. The assistant will use conversational UI for a chat based user experience and the device could come with a dedicated button for one tap access to AI. Samsung has lost the Android flagship crown to Google's Pixel series and it will like reinvigorate the lost momentum with the next flagship device.
Meanwhile, Samsung Galaxy S7 continues to be one of the best Android flagships available right now. Samsung needs to excite consumers about a nine month old device and addition of new colour option seems easier than introducing a new phone altogether.
Samsung recently introduced Coral Blue version of S7 in select markets and according to The Korean Herald, the device is selling almost 15,000 units every day. With glossy black version, Samsung can double down on its offering while it continues to design a fireproof Galaxy S8 for next year.
