Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge halts shrapnel, saves life in Paris attacks
HIGHLIGHTS

In the recent Paris attacks, one man's life was saved by his smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The smartphone took a lot of damage, but saved the man's face and head from the shrapnel that came his way.

Sylvester, a French national, was outside the Stade de France, when a suicide bomber and a gunman created havoc by detonating a bomb and firing off rounds. Sylvester was in close proximity during the rampage, and may have added to the body count, if it were not for his phone, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The smartphone took the brunt of the attack and is in a very bad shape, while Sylvester, thankfully, is wounded but safe. While this does sound like an incident out of a movie where the protagonist is saved by a daily-use object, Sylvester was saved here by his smartphone. The Galaxy S6 Edge did not take a bullet, but absorbed the major force of the shrapnel that was unleashed during the blast.

This is not the first time that we have heard of a smartphone saving a person's life. Previously, a Lumia 520 had saved a Brazil military police officer from getting shot by robbers looting his mother’s home. One bullet missed him completely, while the other one hit the smartphone, which was in his rear pocket.

In another instance, during the robbery of a gas station in Florida, a thief shot a clerk as he left the store. The bullet hit the clerk’s chest, but he managed to survive with an injury and cases of trauma, majorly owing to his HTC Evo 3D absorbing a majority of the impact.

There are many such instances where a victim has been luckily saved because of a smartphone bearing the brunt of the attack – while we continue to complain of our smartphones not being able to handle a drop from a table, or even bending under mild pressure. Maybe such instances may give us faith in the present crop of innovators looking to add more elements to smartphones. For the lucky individuals whose phones have been more than just communication and entertainment devices, it is not a story of being “saved by the bell”, but "by the smartphone”!
