Samsung Galaxy S5 to feature fingerprint scanner, skips iris scan: Reports
HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung has reportedly shelved plans for iris scanner in its forthcoming smartphone Galaxy S5, but will concentrate on fingerprint scanner technology.

Samsung has reportedly abandoned plans to add iris scanner in its forthcoming flagship smartphone, Galaxy S 5. Reports suggest the company will rather focus on the fingerprint scan technology in the next flagship.

Samsung, however, is reportedly testing different types of biometric scanners, but has given up on the “unintuitive user experience of iris recognition”. “Who would want to put their handset up close to their eyes for authentication in places like movie theaters and bed, or even while they are driving?,” Koreanherald quotes an industry source as saying.

“In order to enable iris recognition on a smartphone, an extra camera designed specifically for the identification technology should be installed, which will make the smartphone bigger since there will be three camera modules,” another market source is quoted as saying.

“And since iris recognition requires a long range camera, the smartphone, if fitted with the camera, needs a completely different design from previous models,” he noted.

New information comes shortly Lee Young-hee, an executive vice president of Samsung Electronics, in a recent interview revealed the company was testing the possibility of adding iris recognition technology, but nothing has been confirmed.

It’s notable several global smartphone makers are working on fingerprint scanner after Apple launched the tech with its iPhone 5S. LG Electronics is reportedly working on G3 with a fingerprint scanner. LG’s fingerprint scanner will be very similar to what we saw on the HTC One Max.
