Samsung Galaxy S8 launch: All-screen design, desktop dock and other things to know
Samsung Galaxy S8 is likely to launch in late March and made available for purchase on April 21
Samsung Galaxy S8 is turning out to be one of the most anticipated smartphones. Samsung has confirmed that it won't unveil the product at next month's MWC and now The Guardian claims the device will be announced in late March and the smartphone is likely to go on sale around April 21.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is likely to be the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 processor. Samsung is expected to make curved screen standard this time and The Guardian reports the devices codenamed Dream and Dream 2 will come with an almost bezel-less, edge-to-edge 'infinity' display. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has already leaked in the form of renders in the past and the Guardian has learned that the screen sizes will be in the 5-inch to 6-inch region.
The smartphone is also likely to adopt the iris scanner first introduced in the now discontinued Galaxy Note 7 smartphone. Other details revealed by The Guardian include use of a dual pixel rear camera like last year's Galaxy S7 with incremental improvements to image quality, low light photography and overall capture speed. A recent report revealed that the camera will also integrate Bixby assistant for visual and text recognition.
The Galaxy S8 will come with 64GB standard storage and support expandable storage up to 256GB via microSD card slot. The smartphone will be IP68 waterproof and continue to offer the 3.5mm audio jack. Other new addition will be the use of USB-C port and new Gear VR headset to support the device. However, the most interesting introduction this year could be a dock that turns Galaxy S8 into an Android desktop computer. Motorola tried a similar concept way back in 2011 with its Atrix smartphone and Microsoft offers similar option via Continuum. The dock is reportedly called DeX (desktop extension) and it will be available with the device at the time of launch.
A recent report indicated that Samsung is holding on to Snapdragon 835 for its next-generation flagship. The smartphone is also expected to put focus on artificial intelligence with the introduction of Bixby based on VIV AI platform. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is also rumoured to debut at a slightly higher price than its predecessors.
