Samsung is considering launching the latest version of Android to its budget smartphones, but its heavy and bloated TouchWiz skin might negate Google's efforts on reducing memory consumption.
Samsung is reportedly considering rolling out the latest Android iteration v4.4 KitKat update for mid-range and low-cost smartphones. It’s notable the company has already disclosed its KitKat roll out plans for high-end smartphones including the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4.
According to a Sammobile report, Samsung is mulling over rolling out the update to the smartphones such as the Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S3 mini, Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy Core, Galaxy Fame, Galaxy Ace 2 and the Galaxy Fresh. The report points out the company is just considering the update, which does not necessarily mean the update will actually come. However, the S4 mini is among the smartphones most likely to receive the update.
As you already know, Google is aiming to provide improved Android experience on low-end phones with its v4.4 KitKat update, which features reduced memory consumption on low-memory and low-cost devices (512MB of RAM).
Samsung, however, will have to tweak its custom TouchWiz skin that is preinstalled on its smartphones in order to accommodate the new Android update.
According to reports, Sony is also considering smartphones such as the Sony Xperia SP and Xperia ZR for the KitKat update.
