Samsung climbs to fourth in smartphone chipset market
Qualcomm still holds the top spot in the chipset market followed by Apple and MediaTek; however, Samsung is ranked number one in the global DRAM and NAND Flash markets
Samsung has increased its share in the global application processor (AP) market, and has reached the number four spot. According to a report by Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm still holds the top spot with a market share of 42%, followed by Apple and MediaTek at 21% and 19% respectively. Samsung LSI and Spreadtrum are placed at fourth and fifth positions.
Strategy Anaytics stated “Qualcomm, the leader of the global smartphone AP market, now faced strong competition from Samsung LSI, which is vertically integrated from the semiconductor division to the smartphone division.” The report also noted that the global smartphone AP market declined 4% year-over-year to $20.1 billion in 2015. Samsung is already ranked at the top in the global DRAM and NAND Flash markets.
Other manufacturers have also started using Samsung’s Exynos chipsets in their smartphones. The Meizu Pro 5 is the first non-Samsung device to sport an Exynos 7420 SoC, the same processor used in the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 series of smartphones. There were also reports that said Samsung was working on an Exynos 8870 SoC designed to be used by other manufacturers. The new chipset is tipped to be a slightly less powerful version of the Exynos 8890.
