Reports: Google, Apple prepping wearable devices

Updated on 20-Dec-2011

Google and Apple are reportedly prepping wearable computing devices. Apple has deployed a small team to work on the wearing technology that will allow users to send data to an iPhone or iPod. According to the New York Times, Apple is prepping an iPod that has curved-glass display and can be wrapped around the wrist. Also, the reported device would work with Apple’s voice-based software Siri.

The NYT in its report further says that the concept is in its initial stage but its very much feasible. It further highlights that Apple’s new iPad Nanos feature clock fronts, which is likely to encourage people to wear such mini devices on their wrists. Apple, however, aims to develop the device into a wearing device, which would send data to iPhone. Also, the smartphone could be evolved as the central hub for a mobile communication.

But Apple is not the only one to be working on such device. According to the NYT, engineers at Google’s X Labs are prepping a device that could be placed on the body or clothing. The device is reportedly capable of sharing data with an Android-based device.

The reports of wearing devices come weeks after Samsung unveiled its transparent and flexible tablet concept. Samsung in one of its videos demoed that its concept device could be rolled up like a newspaper or expanded for different purposes. Back in October, Nokia had also unveiled a flexible OLED display. With reports that Apple and Google getting into the wearing technology, we can expect some really innovative devices in near future.
