Highlights:
- Redmi smartphone with Snapdragon 855 allegedly seen in an image.
- The phone is kept on a table, behind Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun.
- The handset is said to feature a notch-free display and a pop-up camera.
After launching the Redmi Note 7, Redmi confirmed that it is working on a Snapdragon 855 powered smartphone. It was also reported that the company will price the phone at RMB 2,500 (Rs 26,000 approx) but no other details regarding it have been revealed since. Now, a new image circulating on Weibo has surfaced online, where Redmi CEO Lei Jun can be seen holding a phone. However, the Redmi phone powered by the Snapdragon 855 is said to be placed on the table behind Jun. Two phones can be seen in tha image, on a table place behind the Xiaomi CEO. There a dark coloured phone and another with a red edge, these are reportedly Redmi's upcoming Snapdragon 855 phones, not the one held by the company executive.
While the image doesn’t give away too much, the report claims that the phone will feature a notch-free, thin-bezel display. Since there’s no notch, the company is said to use a pop-up front camera. A highly-zoomed crop of the image suggests that there might, in fact, be no notch on the phone’s display. There is a 3.5mm audio jack on the device and a seam on the edge’s right portion seems to suggest a pop-up camera. However, since the image is super-blurry, it is difficult to ascertain anything else about the alleged Redmi phone. There’s also no reason to believe whether the handset in the image is actually a Redmi phone with the Snapdragon 855 SoC, but since it appeared on SlashLeaks, it's possible there is some truth to the matter.
The upcoming Snapdragon 855 running smartphone will be Redmi’s first flagship handset. This comes after the company split from Xiaomi so that the latter’s phones generate more business in its segment. The company now has three brands, Poco for ‘affordable premium’ smartphones, Mi for premium phones and Redmi for budget phones. IDC released a report as per which Poco F1 is now the top online selling smartphone in Rs 15,000 and above segment in Q4 2018 with 22.4 percent share.
