Radiation from mobile phones, towers within specified limits: Sibal

Union minister Kapil Sibal has said that the government will ensure that the electro-magnetic radiation from mobile phones and towers stay within stipulated limits. The minister was responding to recent health concerns raised over radiation emitted by mobile phones and towers. Addressing an international conference, Sibal acknolwedged that science and technology had brought in new hazards and solutions for mankind. But human health, he added, should be prioritised ahead of the scientific solutions.

Sibal also revealed that the government had set up an inter-ministerial committee, which had found that emissions from base transceiver stations were within specified limits and thus safe for human beings. The minister said that the government will conduct online checks on these stations to ensure emission never exceeds the prescribed limits and things are safe for people.

It may be recalled that several state governments in the country, including Delhi, have taken measures to check mobile phone radiation. The Delhi government recently made it mandatory for mobile phone manufacturers to display the level of radiation emitted by the devices. The Union government is also planning to come up with stricter rules for these companies from September this year. Under the fresh guidelines, the manufacturers will have to display the radiation level and will be mandatory for them to provide free headset kit with the mobile phones.
