The Qualcomm is said to be developing the new processor for use in laptops and two-in-one convertibles.

Qualcomm seems to be getting serious about taking on Intel in the always-connected laptop segment. The company recently announced its Snapdragon 850 SoC, which delivers up to 30 percent higher performance than the Snapdragon 845, and is aimed at low-power Windows 10 machines that are always on, and always connected. Now, WinFuture reports that the company’s Snapdragon 1000 processor is in the pipeline and it will feature a 12W Thermal Design Power (TDP). For the unaware, TDP refers to the heat dissipation limit of a CPU and higher its value is, the more power can be delivered to components without overheating, given there is a proper cooling system in place.

If the report is believed, then the Snapdragon 1000 SoC will have almost double the TDP in comparison to the Snapdragon 850. In fact, the SoC gets close to the TDP of Intel’s latest generation of processors, which is around 15W. The Snapdragon 1000 will most likely be used for powering Windows 10 laptops and tablet as 12W TDP, may be too much for smartphones to handle. The processor is probably being manufactured by TSMC on a 7nm process and might be used on devices running on Microsoft’s ARM version of Windows.

The report also adds that Asus might be the first to build a laptop running on the new chip. The prototype device is allegedly called ‘Primus’ and is said to feature a screen with 2K resolution and support the WIGig wireless standards, which is an advancement over WiFi. The upcoming chip is speculated to have integrated 4G LTE modems as well as other features for making Snapdragon-powered devices stand out against Intel-powered devices.
