Press Information Bureau launches mobile version of its website

Updated on 03-Sep-2012

Keeping up with the latest trends, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has launched a mobile version of its official website. Users need to enter the URL – http://pib.gov.in/mobile – to access the mobile version, while the original desktop version can be accessed via the URL – pib.gov.in.

The mobile site of the PIB features the latest press releases on the home screen and links to other content on the website. “To make it open instantly in places where the internet connectivity is poor, the mobile site does not display the ‘heavy’ content such as photographs and videos on the homepage. When an alert is issued by PIB, e.g. regarding a press conference to be held soon, this supersedes all content,” says the PIB in a statement.

At present, the mobile version shows only English content. Hindi and Urdu content of the main website will also be available on the mobile version soon.

With the increasing popularity of smartphones and Internet browsing on the go, a lot of companies, as well as the government agencies have launched mobile sites. Some of them have even come up with their mobile apps.

The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) earlier this year launched a mobile website, which featured all the functions available on the PC version such as booking tickets, booking history and ticket cancellation. The IRCTC is also said to be working on its mobile app as well.
