Pepsi to launch P1 smartphone in China
The Pepsi P1 will have a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 1.7GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage
We have had smartphones branded with sports car manufacturers, football teams, and even anime characters. But, Pepsi takes the cake (or should we say the soda) in terms of weird smartphone brandings. The company yesterday confirmed its plans to release a smartphone in China. Dubbed the Pepsi P1, the smartphone will not be manufactured by Pepsi itself, but will carry its logo and branding.
A couple of days back, Mobipicker had reported that Pepsico China is in the process of launching a smartphone. A report by Reuters seemingly corroborates the speculation. "Available in China only, this effort is similar to recent globally licensed Pepsi products which include apparel and accessories," a Pepsico spokeswoman told Reuters via email. While the company will not manufacture the phone by itself, it has presumably partnered with a hardware maker. However, no further details have been provided by the company regarding its hardware partner or the specifications of the phone. The phone is allegedly named the Pepsi P1, and sports mid-range specs.
A purported image of the Pepsi P1’s spec sheet was leaked on Chinese social media site, Weibo. According to it, the phone will come with a 5.5-inch Full HD display. It will be powered by a MediaTek MT6592 octa-core CPU clocked at 1.7GHz, along with 2GB of RAM. It will feature 16GB of internal storage, a 13-megapixel primary camera as well as a 5-megapixel front facing one, and a 3000mAh battery. The Pepsi P1 will reportedly run Android v5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box. From the image, it also looks like the device will have a fingerprint scanner on the back. The phone is expected to be officially announced on October 20, with a price tag of CNY 1,299 (Rs. 13,350 approx.).
Earlier, we have seen smartphone companies releasing limited edition models with brandings of sports cars, football clubs, etc. However, the Pepsi P1 will not be a limited edition device. It will be interesting to see if the Pepsi P1 generates enough fizz to prompt Coca-Cola in trying a similar move, or just 'fizz'les out.
