HIGHLIGHTS

Panasonic has reportedly sent out press invites for an event, where it will show off its first smartphone in India.

Panasonic, a company that has made its name in the world of home appliances, TVs, computers, computer peripherals, home theaters, toughbooks, business solutions and more, is now planning on making its foray into the world of smartphones in India.

Panasonic has sent out media invites for an event that will be held on May 16. The highlight of the invite reads, “The First Ever Panasonic Smartphone”. Information has been circulating the Internet, suggesting Panasonic is now eyeing India’s booming smartphone market.

The smartphone is expected to cater to emerging markets like India and if it is successful here, the smartphone may be introduced to other emerging markets as well. Panasonic already has its Android powered smartphones available in Japan where it is seeing some degree of success. There is no information available whether the same devices will launch in India or will Panasonic design smartphone specific for the Indian audience.

A TV ad that went on air showcases an Android powered smartphone with a 5-inch display and a quad-core processor. We have seen the launch of quite a few quad-core powered smartphones in India in the past few months all of which run on the MediaTek MT6589 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz. We speculate that if Panasonic is targeting the sub 15k budget smartphone market, the smartphone may run on the same chipset.

Pricing, availability and other details of the smartphone will be revealed once the device is announced on the 16 May 2013.
