The company has begun manufacturing the Oppo Joy Plus at Foxconn’s Sri City facility, and expects to set up its own unit by the end of next year

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has started manufacturing mobile phones at Foxconn’s facility in Sri City, on a trial basis. The company announced its plans to manufacture some of their phones locally under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, in September.

Speaking at the launch of the Oppo Neo 7 in Chennai, Oppo Mobiles India vice general manager Kai Feng said, "We have started production in Foxconn manufacturing unit at Sri City SEZ. Right now, trial runs are going on. We are manufacturing Joy Plus mobile phone.” The company had started manufacturing limited quantities of the Joy Plus phone in August to assess the quality of production. According to Feng, setting up Oppo’s own manufacturing facility is also on the cards. The company hopes to achieve that by the end of next year. The Oppo Joy Plus is an entry-level smartphone, released in April this year. It comes with a 4-inch display, 1.3GHz dual-core MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB of onboard storage.

Feng and other senior Oppo officials launched the 4G-enabled Oppo Neo 7 smartphone in Chennai on 31st October. The Neo 7 has a 5-inch qHD (960×540 pixels) display. It is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor and 1GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 128GB via microSD cards. The device houses an 8-megapixel primary camera as well as a 5-megapixel front camera and a 2,420mAh battery. Connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and microUSB port. The Oppo Neo 7 runs ColorOS 2.1 layered on top of Android v5.1 Lollipop.

The company is bullish of its prospects in India. Feng said, "We have sold 4 lakh mobile phones till date. We expect to sell 1.5 million before March 2016.” Mike Wang, Oppo India CEO, had earlier said that the company expects to ship 1 million devices in the country before the year’s end. Tamil Nadu features prominently on the company’s expansion plans. Oppo has an exclusive showroom in Tiruchirapalli, and it plans on adding one more, while opening two showrooms in Chennai.
