OnePlus says there was no need to add wireless charging to the OnePlus 6
OnePlus officials have said that the company did not feel wireless charging was an important feature to add to the OnePlus 6 which sports a glass back.
The OnePlus 6 has launched and is currently reigning as one of the fastest flagship smartphones ever. “It is built for speed,” we noted in our review of the device. However, one thing which is very clearly missing from the phone is wireless charging, a feature most flagship smartphones with glass backs offer. The OnePlus 6 also features Gorilla Glass 5 at the back and the company could have added wireless charging to the phone but it didn’t do so.
When asked why? OnePlus official were quoted as saying, “We don't really feel the need to add wireless charging. We're not going to add a feature just for the sake of it.” Seems like the glass back on the OnePlus 6 is only there to give it a premium look and feel. According to the company, OnePlus users have not really complained about the lack of wireless charging on the OnePlus 6 and are just as happy with its proprietary Dash Charging technology, a name the company might have to replace because of lurking trademark issues.
Wireless charging also begs the need for buying a separate charger, increasing the overall cost of the device. The iPhone X, Galaxy S9, LG V30, all support wireless charging, but their Qi chargers have to be bought separately. OnePlus probably did not want to increase the expense for its users with the addition of the feature. However, the option should rest with the consumers and both Dash Charging as well as wireless charging could have co-existed without the need to compromise on one for the other. In fact, aftermarket Qi chargers are not even that expensive so users could have actually benefited from wireless charging even though it is not as fast as Dash Charging.
The OnePlus 6 goes on open sale starting today. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform and comes with 6GB/8GB of RAM. It features an Optic AMOLED panel with a 19:9 aspect ratio and an FHD+ resolution (1080×2280). In the camera department, it sports 16MP + 20MP dual primary cameras and both lenses have an aperture of f/1.7, while only the 16MP camera features Optical Image Stabilisation. At the front is a 16MP camera with an aperture of f/1.7, EIS and fixed focus.
