OnePlus may merge OxygenOS, HydrogenOS to offer faster updates
According to reports, OxygenOS 3.5 will be used as a base for the merger of the two platforms
OnePlus might be planning to merge its two mobile operating systems into a single OS, according to a report by XDA Developers. OnePlus currently offers two OS’ on its mobile phones – while OxygenOS is offered to the general market and offers an experience similar to stock Android, HydrogenOS is exclusive to the Chinese market and offers a heavily tweaked interface similar to Xiaomi’s MIUI. As per the report, OxygenOS 3.5 will be used as a base for the merger of two platforms.
While having two OS’ might make the phones more appealing to different markets, the drawback is that it uses more of the company's resources to release updates for both. Merging the two together should ensure more timely updates for devices. A company representative said, “The main benefit of combining our team resources is to speed up software updates. We know we have some room to continue improving there, and this is an important step in the right direction.” However, combining OxygenOS and HydrogenOS will most likely result in inclusion as well as removal of certain features. The report noted that Community Builds will help the company understand which features are accepted by users, and which aren’t. To recall, the company unveiled OxygenOS last year with the OnePlus 2, after the company had a fallout with Cyanogen Inc.
