OnePlus 5 to be discontinued in favour of OnePlus 5T, company’s primary focus on online segment
OnePlus says that their older generation smartphones like the OnePlus 3T and the OnePlus 5 will be discontinued as they want to make their best, latest smartphones available to customers. The OnePlus 5T will go up for sale starting November 21 on Amazon.
OnePlus recently unveiled their latest smartphone, the OnePlus 5T. It sports a taller screen with an 18:9 display and a near bezel-less design and will go up for sale on Amazon starting November 21. Indian Express, in a conversation with OnePlus India’s General Manager Vikas Aggarwal, learned that the company will soon discontinue its OnePlus 5 phone “in order to make sure there is one device which is the latest”.
The spokesperson said that the company’s previous smartphone, the OnePlus 3T’s was sold out during Diwali. It was the device’s last batch and the product will now be discontinued. Similarly, when the current batch of the OnePlus 5 smartphones will be sold out, it will be discontinued as well. “As a brand we want to make sure there is one device which is the latest, and the previous devices are usually sold out once the new product launches.” Aggarwal said.
When asked about the company's performance and position in the Indian market, Aggarwal said that OnePlus is one of the three top smartphone brands in India. Citing an IDC report, he said that the OnePlus 5 was the top-selling smartphone in the last quarter with 25 percent of market share. The company also says that its main focus is on the online retail segment as they have 33 percent share of the premium smartphone market and most of their customers buy the smartphones online.
