OnePlus 5 starts receiving Android Oreo update, will get OnePlus 5T’s Face Unlock feature soon
The latest update brings some minor features and optimisations, but leaves out the famed face unlock feature
After updating the older OnePlus 3, 3T to Android 8.0 Oreo recently, OnePlus has finally started bringing the goodness of Oreo to this year’s OnePlus 5. The latest 1.5GB update adds some minor features to the UI along with some software optimisations. However, the famed face unlock feature which was introduced with the OnePlus 5T did not make it to the OnePlus 5 in this update. That said, the camera UI along with the new “Adaptive mode” in the display settings have made their way into the new build for the older phone. However, OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei confirmed via Twitter that the OnePlus 5T's face unlock feature will make its way to the OnePlus 5 at a later date.
The OnePlus 5T, which recently got a limited ‘Star Wars’ edition version, is yet to receive Android 8.0 Oreo. OnePlus recently faced public ire when it released a statement that it won’t be supporting Google’s Project Treble, which is supposed to make Android updates faster. The company did explain how the new software framework requires phone makers to create a separate partition from the get-go. OnePlus said that though implementing it is possible via an OTA, there is a risk of the phone getting bricked. Hence, the company has chosen to stay away from Project Treble.
“Project Treble requires a storage partition, by which the Android framework and vendor image are separated. However, because partitions were not required of Android N and previous versions of Android, all of our current devices do not feature a partition. According to our tests, if we were to modify the partition layout via OTA there is a risk that devices will brick during the partitioning. We feel this poses too great a risk for our community of users, which is why we have decided not to implement Project Treble on current OnePlus devices,” said a community manager on the OnePlus forum.
During the OnePlus 5T launch, OnePlus did announce that the phone will get a beta build of Android Oreo this month, but we are yet to see one.
