OnePlus 5 Android Oreo beta update now available for download, future builds could introduce Face Unlock feature

OnePlus has announced the Open Beta Program for its OnePlus 5 smartphone and users enrolled in the program can download the new Oreo beta update for it. The smartphone is also expected to get the Face Unlock feature in a future update.

The OnePlus 5 smartphone can now be updated to Android Oreo as the company has officially announced the Open Beta Program for the device. With the beta Oreo release, the smartphone was reported to sport the Face Unlock feature, which is seen on the OnePlus 5T. Although the feature is not present in the current build, an XDA Developers report says it could come to the device in a future update.

The Oreo beta update is only available for users enrolled in the Open Beta program. As a beta build, it’s expected to be less stable and have more bugs than the regular OTA updates. The update brings picture-in-picture support, smart text selection, notification dots, auto-fill, and more to the OnePlus 5. The smartphone's launcher is also updated with new quick settings and app folder design. It is also updated with the the October 2017 security patch and gets the Parallel Apps feature, similar to the OnePlus 5T. 

The latest OnePlus smartphone, the OnePlus 5T comes with a Face Unlock security feature. The company claims that the new feature can unlock the phone in 0.4 seconds using facial recognition technology. The OnePlus 5 was rumoured to be updated with Face Unlock with the beta Oreo rolling out for the smartphone, but it isn't included in the current build. A previously leaked Oreo beta ROM indicated a Face Unlock feature for the device and the feature could be present in a future build. 

The OnePlus 5T was unveiled globally on November 16 and it went on an early access sale in India on November 24. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 platform and runs on OxygenOS 4.7.1 running on top of Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The company is rolling out the OxygenOS 4.7.2 update which brings Facial recognition and camera improvements to the OnePlus 5T. The device sports a 6.01-inch FHD+ Optic AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. 

The OnePlus 5T features a dual rear camera setup with 16MP+20MP sensors. Both the sensors feature the same f/1.7 aperture lens and 27.22mm focal length. It comes with a 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture. The smartphone is powered by a 3300mAh battery and it retains the 3.5mm audio jack.

The OnePlus 5T is available in two configurations, one with 6GB RAM/64GB ROM and another with 8GB RAM/128GB ROM. You can read our review of the smartphone here.
