Obi Worldphone SF1, SJ1.5 launched, to come to India soon.
Obi Mobiles has failed once, but this time, it seeks to win over the market by releasing 'high design' phones at a low price.
Dubai-based smartphone company, Obi Mobiles, has launched two new mid-range smartphones, both called Obi Worldphone. The devices will be launched in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and will spread to 70 countries around the world by 2017. According to Co-Founder, John Sculley, the phones — Obi Worldphone SF1 and SJ1.5 — have been released to bridge the gap between high design smartphones at high prices, and generic smartphones that are priced lower.
The Obi Worldphone SF1 has a 5-inch 1080p display from JDI, and also supports 4G connectivity on both FDD and TDD bands. The phone runs on the Android 5.0 operating system, and has a 13MP rear camera with the Sony IMX214 sensor along with a hybrid auto-focus system. There’s also a 5MP front camera, which is accompanied by a LED flash and boasts Dolby Audio technology. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC and has 2GB RAM in the 16GB storage variant, while the 32GB variants gets 3GB of RAM. Storage can be expanded to 64GB and the phone is powered by a 3,000mAh battery.
Obi also plans to launch three 3G and 4G variants of the SF1 and SJ1.5 smartphones. The phones will be launched in markets like Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, UAE and Saudi Arabia first, followed by other international markets. They should also be available in India sometime soon. The phones will be available from October, at a starting price of $129 (approx. Rs. 8,500), going up till $249 (approx. Rs. 16,500). The pricing for the Indian market isn’t available yet.
With the new phones, Obi plans to change its complete brand image, scrapping its existing line of devices for the new Worldphone series. The phones have been designed by San Francisco based Ammunition design studio, which has clients like Citibank, Intel, Skype and others.
