Google Search for Android gets material design makeover, adds new features including the ability to search inside apps with 'Ok Google'.

Google has rolled out a new update for Google Search for Android. The update introduces a visual makeover with Material Design as well voice search to third-party apps. The update is being rolled out first to Android Lollipop devices, like the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9.

Android 5.0 device users will be able to say “Ok Google” to ask a question even if their screen is off and your phone is unplugged. Google will also monitor your email for messages related to plans you are making with your friends or colleagues but that don’t involve a formal calendar invite and will prompt you to set up reminders. Another fun prompt added to the update is flip a coin. Users will be able to say “Okay, Google, flip a coin” to choose between two things.

The Material design update will help users to use voice search to look for content in third-party apps like TripAdvisor, YouTube, etc. Google is also making it easy for developers to add support for this to their apps.

Google states in a post, "Google can now help you search for exactly what you need—even if it's in another app. With a simple prompt like "Ok Google, search Tumblr for 'Things Organized Neatly'" Google will take you right into the app. This now works with a number of apps, so you can also research the best Maui hotels on TripAdvisor, listen to your jam on TuneIn, find a dream home on Trulia, or get tips on how to carve a turkey on YouTube — right from the Google app. Try it out next time you need a shortcut."
