Nokia promises to revolutionize the green concept with the future implementation of bio-batteries which can run on soft drinks like Pepsi and Coca Cola. The concept is a direct outcome of a collaboration deal between Nokia and Chinese designer Daizi Zheng. The idea behind this concept is inspired by Dr.Brown’s gadget in the movie ‘Back to the Future’.
It is widely known that Lithium-ion batteries are expensive, non-recyclable and hazardous to the environment if not disposed correctly. However, Zheng’s concept battery is said to be both eco-friendly and economical due its genuine bio-recycling properties. The bio-battery draws its energy supply by using electricity generated from simple sugar molecules that are catalyzed by using enzymes.
Zheng’s experimental results suggest that the phone hardly requires about 30 ml of soft drinks such as coke or pepsi to run the battery for an entire day. It is estimated that these 100% bio-degradable batteries could last for several hours of talk time and deliver about a week’s standby time. According to Zheng, the potential life span of bio-batteries is about three to four times greater than conventional Lithium-ion batteries.
It is said that once the charge is used up by the bio-battery, it leaves behind oxygen and water as the resultant by-products. To refuel the bio-battery, all you need to is to add a little more soda.
As per Zheng’s visions for the future, the bio-battery concept could find its application in MP3 players and mobile internet devices in addition to cellphones. However, as per predictions, it could take about 3 to 5 years to implement this technology on a commercial scale and for it to go live in the market.
