No Android plans, we’re committed to Maemo: Nokia

Every few weeks, we hear a buzz from some corner of the Web that Nokia is going to launch an Android-based phone. Well, at the Nokia press event on Thursday, the company flatly denied going in any such direction.

Senior officials said that the company is completely committed to Maemo at the moment, hinting at the launch of the upcoming N-900 and perhaps a series of touchscreen phones based on the platform.

A Reuters report also backed the story, with analyst Tero Kuittinen from MKM Partners saying: “Maemo is clearly far more flexible than Symbian, so it’s a better option for advanced devices using various display technologies and rapidly evolving user-interface software.”

Still, this does not ring the death knoll for the popular Symbian operating system. The same Nokia officials also said that with the platform set to go open-source soon, it will boost development and make it easier for the company to offer more features and services to their customers.
