HIGHLIGHTS

A leaked image, which is supposedly of the next generation Moto X, shows a heat pipe which could mean that the device will use a Snapdragon 810 or even Snapdragon 820 SoC

The next generation of the Moto X smartphone may come with a heat pipe to cool down its chipset. A leaked image, which supposedly shows the inside of the prototype, shows a heat pipe suggesting that the chipset used in the device may have heating issues. Phones like the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium and the Microsoft Lumia 950XL have also employed cooling techniques to dissipate the heat generated by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC. This could mean that the upcoming device may be powered by the same processor. There is also a possibility that the upcoming Moto X may be powered by the Snapdragon 820.

A few months ago, rumours were circulating that Samsung’s engineers were running into heating issues with the Snapdragon 820 SoC. It was reported the company was attempting to rectify the issue by modifying the microprocessor control. If that fails, the company may resort to using heat pipes to dissipate the heat generated. Samsung has been tipped to use the Snapdragon 820 processor in certain variants of the the Galaxy S7. However, Qualcomm refuted the rumours about the SoC heating. In a statement on its Weibo account, the company said that the chipset meets its design specifications and will continue to be improved. The Snapdragon 810’s heating issues were well documented, and Qualcomm had to come up with a new version of the chipset, called Snapdragon 810 v2.1, to tackle the issue.

There is also a possibility that the upcoming Moto X will come with a fingerprint scanner. Technology journalist @Ricciolo1 posted a tweet that hinted at the possibility of a fingerprint scanner added to the device. The last time Motorola used a fingerprint scanner on phone was back in 2011, when it launched the ATRIX 4G.

Last week, a leaked image which was supposedly of the fourth generation Moto X appeared online. The image showed a metal unibody design and a large circular camera housing which incorporated the camera and the flash. The top and bottom of the rear panel had plastic sections for the antenna to work.
