New images of Xiaomi Mi 5 appear online
The two purported images show a black variant of the device with the home button on the front as well as the metallic frame
The Xiaomi Mi 5 will most likely launch next month, and new images purported to be of the black variant of the device have appeared online. The images were initially posted on Weibo, but have since been removed. The two images show the front panel and the metallic frame of the device, and match the earlier leaked renders and images of the Mi 5, including the thin home button, which may include the fingerprint scanner.
Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship phone has been leaked numerous times by now in the form of renders, specifications, and a video as well. Leaked press renders have suggested that the device will be available in multiple colours like black, gold, pink, and white. It has been tipped to come with a 5.2-inch Quad HD display, and will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC. It is also expected to feature a 16MP camera at the back, with a 13MP front camera. Rumours suggest that there will be two variants of the device, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, while the other may have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
Last week, Xiaomi’s co-founder and VP, Liwan Jiang, had confirmed via his Weibo account that the Mi 5 will launch in February, and will be powered by the Snapdragon 820. In his post, he had written then the phone will be released after the Spring Festival, which is scheduled to be held on February 8. However, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is not the first smartphone to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. That honour goes to the LeTV Le Max Pro, which was unveiled at CES 2016. The phone comes with a 6.33-inch WQHD display and runs Android Marshmallow v6.0. At the rear is a 21MP camera with a fingerprint sensor located below it. It also comes with a 3400mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 2.0. However, being the first to launch a Snapdragon 820 powered smartphone was not something Xiaomi was aiming for. Last month, the company’s CEO, Lei Jun had said that Xiaomi was more focused on user experience rather than being the first to launch with Snapdragon 820. It was earlier thought that the Samsung Galaxy S7 would be the first to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820, but that didn’t happen. The Galaxy S7 is expected to be announced during the World Mobile Congress event in Barcelona.
